A sociological overview on the transformation of cities: the Modern City (urbanization and industrialization, social conflicts, private life and public experience, …); the Post-Modern City (de-industrialization and de-urbanization, new urban social demand, gentrification, …); issues of contemporary cities (new economies, competitiveness, cultural segmentation, integration, safety, …)

The course will examine main social, cultural, economic and architectural characteristics of contemporary city both in Europe and in USA. In order to better understand the major changes that have been shaping the cities we are living in today, a preliminary special attention will be paid to the modern industrial city, that lasted 150 years since the second half of the XIX century. The analyses will deal mainly with European cities.
