Lecture by Alberto Iacovoni (ma0)
Alberto Iacovoni, architect and founding partner of Rome-based ma0 (www.ma0.it), will join us for a lecture on Tuesday, October 20, at 5:00 pm. The lecture will be introduced by professor Marco Brizzi.
Alberto Iacovoni’s talk, titled Naive Architecture, will explore the fundamental — and seemingly naive — questions that arise whenever we approach design with the ambition of changing the world, hopefully for the better. Reflecting on the (ir)relevance of small-scale architecture, Iacovoni will discuss its political potential to create not only shelter for the few, but, above all, open and shared spaces for the many.
ma0 is an architecture firm based in Rome, founded in 1996. Its work engages with an expanded understanding of architecture as an interdisciplinary medium in dialogue with its territory. From built structures to video interfaces, ma0 conceives architecture as a system of spatial rules — a playground — capable of transforming relationships between space and its inhabitants, public and private, indoors and outdoors, the artificial and the natural, the real and the virtual.
Working across architecture, graphic design, and interactive communication, the firm combines design practice with theoretical research through projects, competitions, lectures, and workshops. Each undertaking becomes an opportunity to investigate the relationship between architectural form and its social role.
ma0 approaches architecture as an open, interactive, and process-based system, adaptable to appropriation, transformation, and further development by its inhabitants. Its research and experimentation seek to empower users to shape the spaces they inhabit, from temporary installations to permanent buildings, while restoring intensity of use and a multiplicity of relationships to the contemporary city.
